“To stop deaths in the English Channel, the Government must explore alternative asylum arrangements”

Following the anniversary of the tragic loss of life in the English Channel last November, and ahead of an EU meeting on safe and legal routes, RAMP Principal David Simmonds MP argues that the government’s focus on deterrence policies detracts from developing solutions that can effect real change in the UK asylum system. Whilst David Simmonds welcomed the increased cooperation with France in the latest Channel crossings deal, he also noted that the agreement fails to recognise the reasons why many people risk their lives to make these crossings in the first place, calling instead for the opening of other safe, and legal, routes to apply for asylum in the UK.
