Contributions for RAMP Cross-Party Submission - Safe and Legal Routes

Baroness Williams announced a review on safe and legal routes to the UK for asylum seekers, refugees and their families on 21st October 2020 during the Immigration Bill debates. The RAMP Parliamentary Principals (David Simmonds MP, Neil Coyle MP, Tim Farron MP and Lord Bishop Paul Butler) are seeking to make a cross-party submission to this review that details a shared approach that they can all champion. We believe this is a distinctive contribution that RAMP can add to wider inputs to the review.

In order for the Principals to shape the submission, we are asking a range of organisations and policy think tanks to share their own thoughts and to contribute a short document (2 sides max) summarising their reflections and proposals for developments in safe and legal routes to the UK for refugees.

If you would like to contribute, we would like you to consider the following questions:

  1. What reflections do you have on improving existing safe & legal routes?

  2. What proposals would you recommend for new safe & legal routes?

  3. Do you have a view on the use of Humanitarian Visas on which people can travel in order to claim asylum in the UK?

There is currently a lack of clarity around the timescale and process of the review which we are seeking to clarify. We assume however that the timeframe is short so are keen to begin work on the submission as soon as possible.

Please can you email your contributions to info@rampproject.org by Friday 15th January.

RAMP Principals will then consider these proposals and discuss where they can find consensus. We may well follow up with a zoom discussion if there are issues that the Principals would like to ask more questions on. A submission from the Principals will then be written for the Home Office, with the aim of creating an opportunity for constructive engagement with Government on this topic. We will also be seeking to highlight the submission through media opportunities. This submission will also help inform the RAMP Principals and Associates for the forthcoming Sovereign Borders Bill debates.
