All four RAMP Principals in the Commons contributed to the debate on the second reading the Nationality and Borders Bill on July 19/20.

Caroline Nokes MP (see recording here) spoke of the importance of recognising the individuals behind every visa application and asylum claim. She also emphasised that small boat crossings cannot be resolved on the water, encouraged ambition with the resettlement scheme and noted the proposals' potential negative consequences for local authorities.

Neil Coyle MP (see recording here) said the Bill would undermine the UK's international standing and raised concern around the practical implementation and cost of the proposals. He also argued that it was unfair to vulnerable refugees, local councils and taxpayers.

Tim Farron MP (see recording here) refuted the premise that the UK is overrun by asylum seekers and stressed the need for safe routes. He said the proposed two-tier system may not be compatible with international law, while also increasing migrants' vulnerability to exploitation.

David Simmonds MP (see recording here) called for a global perspective and a compassionate system that is humane, efficient, safe and well resourced. He emphasised the importance of integration and urged the government to build on the success of the resettlement scheme, while affirming the need to address smuggling networks.
