Safe and Legal Routes must be a Pillar of our Asylum System
In November 2021, in the aftermath of the death of 27 asylum seekers attempting to cross the Channel, RAMP Principal and Conservative MP David Simmonds wrote an article in Politics Home asking the Home Office to renew its determination to introduce safe and legal routes for refugees. The article discusses a range of solutions to manage asylum applications in a more humane and practical manner; from increasing the number of refugees arriving to the UK under the global UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS), to supporting local councils to house asylum seekers and aid their integration prospects by lifting the ban to work in the UK, to ensuring the removal of unsuccessful asylum seekers by collaborating more effectively with other countries.
