The UK economy is at a crossroads as it deals with a series of unprecedented shocks, including the aftermath of Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic. Migration has always played a significant role for both small and large businesses and has enabled them to fill skills gaps or shortages in the UK labour market. On 1 January 2021, the UK’s new Points Based System came into effect.

Last December the APPG heard from a range of employers about their hopes and fears for the new system. Working with Fragomen LLP, we conducted an inquiry to hear, in real time, the impacts that employers from different sectors and in different parts of the country were starting to experience. At this event, we will share the findings from this inquiry and discuss the reforms the Government could undertake to potentially ease the transition to new ways of working.

Chair -  Tim Farron MP

Speakers:

  • Gemma Hyslop, a Manager and Solicitor at Fragomen LLP and author of the APPG inquiry report.

  • Madeleine Sumption, Director of the Migration Observatory, Oxford, and member of the Migration Advisory Committee.

  • Representatives from Parliament and private sector to be confirmed.
